Why Do Pilates

I can’t say enough about how important Pilates has been to me. I am 72 and have been working with Claudia for nearly 5 years. Pilates has kept me active, flexible and strong. As a professor of nursing, I know how important consistent exercise is, but it has always been hard for me to stick with an exercise program. We joke that Pilates is “addictive,” but I feel so energized after a session I can hardly wait for the next one.

I was first introduced to Pilates at a time when I was weight lifting daily. Although I was strong, I became discouraged because as my body increased in bulk, my muscles tightened and I became less flexible and more contracted. Pilates seemed to be the perfect solution, however I feared due to my stature, inflexibility, and being a male, I would not be able to do the exercises. Happily, I was wrong! I have been training with Claudia three times per week for the past two years and the changes in my life have been amazing and deeply gratifying. Claudia teaches the Authentic Classic Pilates method not the adapted knock-off available at most gyms. She is a gifted teacher and learning from her has been a rare treat and a privilege.

I began practicing Pilates just before becoming pregnant with my second child. Due to morning sickness it was a challenge to continue my workouts. Claudia designed a safe and effective maternity program and encouraged me to stick with it. The efforts paid off! Not only was the nine months void of the structural aches and pains I experienced during my first pregnancy, I lost my 55 lb. weight gain in a record 6 weeks! I still continue to practice Pilates and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a results driven program.

In addition to my workouts at Body and Mind Studio, I am still a member if a local sports facility. They have adopted Pilates Mat Classes and more recently “reformer classes.” When I dropped in one of their mat classes, I was surprised that the teacher was on the mat doing the exercises along with the group of 12 plus students! Pilates is a wonderful form of exercise that needs a coach/watchful teacher observing and correcting so participants do the moves correctly, therefore getting maximum benefit and minimum risk. Going to a Pilates mat class where the teacher is doing the exercise with the class, instead of conducting and observing, may be cheaper, but definitely more risky!

Claudia and I have been working together for a year now. She is a wonderful teacher and truly cares about her student’s goals and aspirations. Through our sessions together I have gained core strength, balance, body control and flexibility. The impact Pilates has had on my riding is amazing. I have been able to progress in my training much more rapidly then ever before. My horse is happier and I am thrilled with my progress. I encourage anyone who is interested in improving their dressage performance to give Pilates a try — it really works.

I’ve been doing Pilates since February 2000, and it is unequivocally the best thing I’ve ever done for myself. I had a bad lower back from years of dancing and playing soccer, combined with some minor spine curvature. I began with private sessions, started mat classes, and slowly, the discomfort and tightness I felt in my back began to disappear. Meanwhile, I was regaining flexibility and strength. I even started to experience a “Pilates high” after my workouts! I enjoy it so much that I am currently working on my own mat teaching certification.
